Behind-the-scenes, looking after your skin after Botox treatments.

Updated: Oct 25, 2023

Botulinum Toxin known as Botox ® is understood by most people to reduce the appearance.

of facial wrinkles thereby helping with signs of ageing. This is true, Botox ® is an excellent treatment for reducing the appearance of fine lines and dynamic wrinkle movement. It can be used to treat your frown lines (angry lines), crows’ feet (wrinkles around your eyes), forehead lines, lip lines (smokers’ lines), platysmal bands in your neck, teeth grinding, and it has several other uses. Botox ® is a neuromodulator treatment and although Botox ® is the most well-known brand on the market there are several other neuromodulator brands on the market today including Xeomin ®, Daxify ®, Juveau ®, and Dysport ®.

All neuromodulator treatments work to diffuse into the tissue selectively and reversibly in the presynaptic terminal of the neuromuscular junction. Then the toxin attaches to a protein-membrane inhibiting the release of acetylcholine in the neuromuscular junction. This action causes the targeted muscles in your face to reversibly relax. The result is, you look in the mirror and you will see a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles including wrinkles that occur on movement, for example frowning.

In medical spas, which is the industry of cosmetic medicine Botox ® treatments are mostly performed for cosmetic appearances. The clinical effects of Botox ® are seen within the first few days with full results achieved in two weeks. Eventually, usually around 3 to 4 months, the treatment will gradually resolve, and your muscle movement will return. Some neuromodulator brands are marketed to have a longer lasting effect. Even so, these too will eventually resolve, and further treatments are required. Bearing in mind that due to different muscle arrangements and other factors the duration of Botox ® treatments effects can vary from person to person. This is also true for dosing, meaning that some individuals may require more dosing than another to achieve the desired relaxation of the targeted muscle.

Botox ® treatments will help to smooth out wrinkles over time. However, on its own, Botox ® will not stop your skin from ageing. I strongly recommend, and what I do, is look after your skin at home with skin products with quality ingredients. This does not mean your skin care needs to be super expensive. As the more expensive does not mean it is necessarily better for your skin. One ingredient I like in my eye serum is Acetyl hexapeptide-8 hexapeptide-3 which is known as the trademarked name.

This is a Botox derivative peptide that is used to treat fine lines and wrinkles as an alternative to Botox ®. I personally don’t consider it an alternative, but I do consider Argireline® to be excellent in combination with Botox ® treatments. I always educate my clients that Botox ® treatments along with caring for your skin at home will help reduce the signs of ageing as you age. The take home message is, quality skin care ingredients with one been Argireline®, not forgetting using daily moisturizer and sunblock will help you get the most out of your Botox® treatments. Here at Northern Lights Beauty and Health we are here to help you get the most out of your Botox® treatments and skin care be as cost effective as possible.
